Almost 4k trucks non-serviceable after nationwide road check

Many Mississippi truck drivers may be out of work due to a nationwide inspection held Sept. 11 through 17. The annual event, known as the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's Brake Safety Week, left nearly 4,000 large commercial trucks across the country out of service because of brake and other mechanical violations.

According to the report, inspectors were able to accomplish roughly 18,000 inspections during the week. Of the trucks they inspected, 21.5 percent had to be placed out of service. The CVSA inspectors gave special attention to the trucks' brakes, particularly brake fluid leaks; lose parts; and damaged, worn or cracked brake pads, linings, rotors and drums. They further checked to make sure each truck's anti-lock braking system malfunction indicator lamps was in compliance.

The CVSA Director of Vehicle Programs stated that 2,352 of the nearly 4,000 trucks that were inspected and placed out of service had brake violations, and around 1,100 of them had a mix of both brake and various other violations. In regards to the inspection of ABS-required commercial trucks, 1,436 of those with hydraulic brakes had ABS violations, and almost 1,500 of the air-braked trucks inspected had ABS violations.

The president of the CVSA stated that the annual inspection of the commercial trucks' braking systems is highly important to the well-being of the trucks and their drivers, as well as to other drivers. He also said that the Brake Safety Week was to remind motor carriers and truck drivers how vital it is to keep their trucks' brake systems in tip-top condition, and that commercial trucks with critical violations should not be allowed on public roadways.

People who are severely injured or who lose a loved one via a truck driver's negligent actions might wish to file a claim for compensation. Plaintiffs who prevail in such cases could recoup their medical expenses and property losses stemming from the truck accident.
