Study identifies states with most dangerous drivers

When it comes to dangerous driving, Tennessee ranks roughly somewhere in the middle of the 50 states according to 2015 data from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration that was analyzed by the auto insurance comparison website CarInsuranceComparision.com. The report examined five different elements related to motor vehicle accidents: drunken driving, failure to obey traffic signals or wear seat belts, speeding, fatalities per 100 million miles traveled and careless driving.

Texas and Louisiana tied for first place as the two most dangerous states with Texas coming in ninth place for speeding and fatalities per miles driven and third place for drunk driving. Louisiana ranked fifth for careless driving and fatalities per miles and first for failure to obey traffic signals. A spokesperson for the website said that both states have fared poorly for several years and that the study demonstrates the extent to which human error is responsible for motor vehicle accidents.

In 2015, safety advocates and others became concerned when the fatality rate for motor vehicle accidents, which had been declining for years, made its biggest percentage leap since 1966. It went up 7.2 percent compared to 2014 with a total of 35,092 deaths. Policy experts, data scientists and government officials are examining ways to bring the rate back down again.

Accidents that are not fatal can still lead to serious injuries and may be financially devastating. The costs of injuries such as a traumatic brain injury, amputation or paralysis may lead to lifelong expenses. People may lose wages during their recovery or be unable to return to work at their previous level. If the negligence of another driver was the cause of the accident, an injured victim may want to have a lawyer's help in pursuing compensation from the at-fault motorist through a personal injury lawsuit.
