Researchers urge seat belt use for children

When Governor Phil Bryant signed Senate Bill 2724 into law on April 5, Mississippi became the 29th state to require all passenger vehicle occupants to fasten theirs safety belts. Front seat passengers and children were already required to buckle up, but research from Harvard University and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center suggests that drivers routinely ignore the law and police officers in the state could do more to enforce it.

IIHS tests side-mounted underride guards

Semi-tractor trailers in Mississippi and around the country should be fitted with side-mounted underride guards according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Federal lawmakers are considering regulations that would require truck operators to fit underride guards to the rear of their trailers, but the IIHS says that mounting safety guards to the sides of trailers would likely save many lives as well. The Virginia-based nonprofit organization came to this conclusion after testing the devices to see how well they protect passenger vehicle occupants in a crash.

Understanding nursing home patient rights

Mississippi residents who live in nursing homes are protected by a variety of federal regulations. For instance, they have the right to see and visit with family members, service providers and government representatives, among others. They also have the right to keep their own clothing and other possessions assuming that it is safe to do so. Those who receive government benefits cannot be asked to leave a nursing home because of that fact. Medicare or Medicaid recipients may also not receive differing levels of treatment compared to those who pay out of their own funds.
