Truck accidents pose a deadly threat

For drivers in Mississippi, truck accidents can be particularly frightening. When large, heavy semi trucks are involved in a crash, the outcome can be deadly, especially for occupants of smaller vehicles on the road. This fear is backed up by statistics from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Between 2015 and 2017, fatalities in large truck and bus accidents increased each year, including for the drivers of the trucks themselves. In addition, deadly work zone accidents involving large trucks increased every year in the same three-year period.

In addition, the percentage of all deadly accidents that involved large trucks grew annually. This indicates that truck accidents are both more common and more deadly than they were in the past. There are a number of factors that contribute to trucking accidents, but dangerous, negligent or unqualified truck driving can be a major cause of these serious and deadly crashes. Just as drivers of smaller passenger vehicles can cause severe crashes by paying more attention to their smartphones than the road, the same is true of truck drivers. And when the vehicles themselves are so much larger and heavier, the effects can be even more devastating.

In addition, a number of truck crashes are caused by a lack of visibility, awareness or signaling, especially work zone crashes. Truck drivers, because of their high position, can often see what is happening further down the road. However, if they fail to signal when changing lanes, other drivers may have no idea what to expect.

In many cases, serious and even deadly truck collisions are caused by negligent or dangerous behavior, like texting while driving, speeding or even fatigued driving. Someone who has been injured in a truck crash can work with a personal injury lawyer to seek compensation for their damages.
